Oral rinses can be a great alternative for patients who’s jaws have fused.

When FOP causes the jaw to fuse, oral rinses may be the only way to reach the tongue and inner surfaces of the teeth. Oral rinses are not a replacement for daily brushing and flossing. Only brushing and flossing disrupts the biofilm that develops on the teeth causing plaque. However, mouthwashes may help get into areas missed by brushing. Therabreath Mouthwash has been suggested by members of the Support4FOP group.

If you choose to use an over-the-counter mouthwash after brushing, make sure you are using one that is alcohol-free to avoid killing off the healthy bacteria in
your mouth, thus maintaining a more stable balance of your mouth’s microbiome. It is important to talk with your dentist to determine which mouthwash or oral rinse will be best to use for your specific oral health risks.
