Wheelchair Foundation
Purpose
The Wheelchair Foundation is a global nonprofit established in June 2000 by philanthropist Kenneth E. Behring. Headquartered in Danville, California, the foundation works internationally—often partnering with service groups like Rotary Clubs, Knights of Columbus, and Sister Cities—to deliver free manual wheelchairs to individuals who need them but cannot afford them.
Description
The Wheelchair Foundation provides brand-new manual wheelchairs free of charge to children, teens, and adults worldwide who lack the means to acquire them. Through a global network of partnerships—including Rotary Clubs, Knights of Columbus chapters, and other nonprofit affiliates—the foundation handles donation logistics, transportation, and distribution to ensure wheelchairs reach those who need them most. Individuals may either be nominated or apply to receive a wheelchair through the foundation’s website, which guides applicants or sponsoring organizations through the request process. These collaborative efforts aim to restore independence, dignity, and mobility to people facing significant financial or infrastructural barriers.
