Adaptable Cushion
Purpose
Kimi, who lives with FOP in the United States, created this adaptable cushion. She got the idea when her original wheelchair travel pillow was too big for the seat. Now she uses the pillow to sit on the couch, providing extra height and assistance when moving from sitting to standing.
It took her several tries to make the right pillow. She says, ” The biggest issue was determining how much of the memory foam pieces I needed to put in the pillow to make it work best for me. It took a couple of tries before I found a good amount of memory foam pieces to have inside. I didn’t even consider this as an option at all until I was looking around a department store for any cushion options and came across a bunch of these pillows in the clearance section. I thought I might as well try it, and, worst comes to worst, I have another pillow.”
How to make
Items Needed: Fillable memory foam pillow, shredded memory foam pieces, a basic oversized bath towel, needle, and thread
- Open the outer pillow zipper and the inner pillow zipper to get to the memory foam pieces and overstuff the pillow.
- Take the towel and fold it in half, placing it over the pillow to ensure proper fitting
- Pin the edges of the towel; use thread to hand-stitch the two edges together to make a cover.
