Shoe Tongue Hook
Description
Oliver, who lives with FOP in the UK, and his dad created this shoe tongue hook to help him pull up the tongues of his trainers/shoes so they wouldn’t feel lumpy.
He says, ” I needed a tool to help me pull my tongue out of my trainers. I had found these clip-on shoe hooks which were great, but then I needed assistance with the last step of pulling the awkward tongue out. It was this small thing that meant I always needed help to leave the house. I explained the problem to my dad, so he helped me make this simple hook. Now I can fully do my own shoes, and it doesn’t matter if no one else is in the house. It’s made a big difference to my independence. It now means I don’t have to ask someone to put my shoes on for me. This was an issue, as sometimes I don’t leave the house at the same time as everyone else. I used to have to put my shoes on before they left the house. Now I can just get up and go. It’s also been a real help when I have gone away on residential trips with my college and without my family to assist. I have been able to ask for less support from my friends.”
How to make
- Take a regular hook and straighten it with a hammer This means it slides in and out of the label easily.
- Screw it into the end of the broom handle
We purchased the shoe-heel-sliders online for super cheap, along with the wall-mounted clip. This means my tool is always at the height I need it.
This tool was created as part of the 2026 Ability Toolbox Homemade Tools Contest. More information about the contest can be found on theĀ IFOPA Webpage. The IFOPA would like to thankĀ The Radiant Hope Foundation for their generous financial support of this program.
