Purpose

***Everyone with FOP will have different needs when adapting a vehicle to drive. It is important to work with a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist or another professional to determine your specific needs.***

Description

An Automatic Braking System (ABS)  is an advanced safety feature designed to assist drivers by preventing collisions and reducing stopping distances. These systems use sensors, cameras, and radar technology to detect obstacles, other vehicles, or sudden changes in traffic conditions, automatically applying the brakes if the driver does not react in time.

How Automatic Braking Systems Work

Automatic braking systems function through Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technologies. When the system detects an imminent collision, it first issues a visual and audible alert to warn the driver. If the driver does not respond, the system engages the brakes to either slow down or completely stop the vehicle. Some adaptive vehicles integrate ABS with other mobility aids, such as joystick steering, hand controls, or voice-activated commands, enhancing overall driving safety for individuals with disabilities.
