Tilt in Space Shower Chair
Purpose
Tilt-in-space rolling shower/commode chairs are wheeled bathroom chairs that allow the entire seat and backrest to tilt backward as one unit, while keeping your hip angle the same. Unlike reclining chairs (where the backrest leans back while the seat stays in place), a tilt-in-space chair gently tips the whole body to a safer, more comfortable position for washing hair and other body parts. This might be very helpful for those with limited hip and spine mobility. Tilt-in-space shower chairs also reduce pressure on the buttocks and the lower back. Many tilt-in-space chairs also roll over the toilet and can be used as a commode, which may reduce the number of transfers you need in a small, slippery bathroom space.
Description
Tilt-in-space chairs come in many sizes and configurations. Not every model will work for every body type or bathroom layout. You will want to consider the tilt range, seat shape and size, back and head support, and the type of arm and footrests.
Tips
-
Work with a seating professional.
An occupational therapist, physical therapist, or wheelchair/seating clinic can help measure your body, consider your joint range of motion, and recommend specific supports and cushions. -
Plan for home access.
Measure doorways, turns in hallways, and your shower entrance before ordering a chair. Tilt-in-space models often have a larger base than standard shower chairs. -
Start with small tilts.
If you are new to tilt, ask your caregiver to adjust the angle slowly and check in with you about comfort, dizziness, or pain. -
Use positioning supports.
Lateral supports, chest straps, or pelvic belts may be needed to keep you safely in alignment—especially when the chair is tilted back. -
Have a backup plan.
If tilt feels uncomfortable or if you’re having a flare-up or increased pain, it can help to have an alternate bathing strategy ready (such as a basin bath, bed bath, or partial shower) that doesn’t require full tilt.
Where to purchase
In the United States, Europe, and Canada, tilt-in-space shower/commode chairs may be covered partly or fully by insurance. Tilt-in-space shower chairs can be purchased in durable medical equipment stores or at online retailers.
